The dentist may perform oral surgery or refer to hospitals oral surgeon. An oral surgeon is kind of dentist who has postgraduate degree from a university based on program in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Oral surgery is a specialty on dentistry that focuses on surgical treatment of dental diseases, injuries, disorders and defects of the soft and hard tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Sometimes, after minor oral surgery, someone may feel pain, often bleeding and swelling. Correct care after oral surgery will help the mouth heal cleanly and quickly. Once the anesthetic wears off, some pain in teeth is normal. Someone might have the most pain in the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours after the surgery. After surgery one may vomit, so it’s suggested by dentist not to take anything by mouth for at least an hour including the medicine. One should not take a sip on Coke, tea or ginger ale after surgery. When the nausea subsides one can start taking solid foods and the given medicine.
The dentist or oral surgeon will prescribe medication. One should tell the dentist about other prescribed medicines or herbal supplements that he or she is taking. Take the medication exactly the way the dentist or oral surgeon has instructed. There is something one must avoid after the surgery like, not to take more medication than advised by dentist, avoid drinking alcohol when taking pain relief medication.
Good oral hygiene is important for fast healing. From the day after surgery, the Peridex should be used two times daily as prescribed by dentist, before bed and after breakfast. If someone is prescribed antibiotics after surgery, make sure to take those according to instructions in order to avoid infection. Take the prescribed pain relief medication as needed when the anesthetic wears off. If you are allergic to any medications better mention that to the dentist.
Dental surgery is a normal process. So it’s important not be afraid about it, better talk to family members, friends and neighbors who have prior surgery experience. A successful dental surgery can cure dental problems and it depends mostly on the skill of a dentist.
